When people ask me what Rethinking Prevention™ means, they often expect a new clinical technique, protocol or product.
It is none of these.
Rethinking Prevention™ is a different way of thinking about prevention.
For many years, prevention has often been delivered as a collection of individual procedures: a professional cleaning, fluoride application, oral hygiene instruction or a risk assessment.
All of these are valuable.
But on their own, they rarely create lasting change.
True prevention is not defined by a single procedure. It is defined by a philosophy that guides every interaction with the patient.
Every dental practice has its own priorities and philosophy.
Some want to focus on gingival health. Others on caries prevention, enamel preservation, implant maintenance or patients with systemic conditions.
The specific topic is not what matters most.
What matters is whether prevention is embedded into the way the practice works every day.
That is where Rethinking Prevention™ begins.
It is about helping dental professionals and clinics translate their prevention philosophy into practical, structured frameworks that can be implemented consistently by the whole team.
Because a philosophy only creates value when it can be applied in everyday practice.
This means asking different questions.
How do we make prevention visible to patients?
How do we create consistency across the whole team?
How do we support patients in developing lifelong skills rather than simply providing treatment?
How do we measure success?
How do we ensure that prevention is valued not only by professionals, but also by patients?
These questions are relevant whether we are talking about gingival inflammation, caries prevention, enamel health, risk assessment or any other area of preventive care.
The topic may change.
The philosophy does not.
Throughout my career as a dental hygienist, international speaker and Global iMGi Project Manager, I have seen that most professionals already believe in prevention.
The challenge is rarely motivation.
The challenge is implementation.
That is why I created Rethinking Prevention™.
Not to replace existing knowledge, but to help make prevention visible, valued and successful.
Because I believe the future of dentistry will not be defined only by new technologies or new materials.
It will be defined by how successfully we help people build the knowledge, skills and habits that support lifelong oral health.
Perhaps it is time to rethink prevention…
